Had each interesting time yesterday at Aberdeen University. I sit on their Careers Service Employers Board, supporting the literary institution’s excellent efforts to ensure their students are employable which time they graduate. They offer a STAR programme which allows students who are influential within the university through being class reps, on committees etc to grow their learning from the experiece and gain an award at the expiration of the year which they can then show to prospective employers.
Yesterday STAR was united of the projects presented to an external review body and I was invited in a line with other members of the team involved in developing and delivering STAR. It was a true formal process with probing questions asked by the review panel. It was definitely self-same academic with much emphasis on literature and methods. What surprised me principally, however, was that there was absolutely no mention of money, costs involved or estimation for money for any of the projects discussed! I have no reason to think that the university wastes money or is profligate – but it was an interesting difference between academia and transaction.
