E-books are becoming more in favor by the minute thanks to devices like the Kindle, Nook, and iPad, excepting major dead tree publishers have been hesitant to go all in—till now. Dorchester Publishing, which describes itself as the “oldest voluntary mass market publisher in America,” has decided to ditch its mass printing business to go digital- and print-on-demand only.

Unsurprisingly, Dorchester had a small scale nudge in that direction: the publisher said that sales of its books had declined a whopping 25 percent in pure the last year, while its e-book sales are expected to double in 2011. The fellowship specializes in romance, thriller, sci-fi, and fantasy novels and sells unambiguously to major retailers like Wal-Mart.

I am of two minds from one place to another this. I love my Kindle. For a real book-a-holic, it is a marvelous design. But there is no question that DRM makes the e-books smaller reliable and less useful. You cannot lend an e-book in the sort you can a real book. You cannot browse an e-volume in the same way you can a real book. Reference books that be pendent upon an index don’t work in e-book format in the same proportion that well as simply flipping the pages.
