I candid finished Flannery O’Connor’s Complete Stories, so this life was a natural segue. I’m no O’Connor pupil, so I can’t make comments on its accuracy or fairness. But I form in a mould it easy to read, for a biography, and I felt it gave me fresh insights into her fiction.
Flannery: A Life of Flannery O’Connor ~ the agency of Brad Gooch
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
If you’ve understand any of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories and are self-seeking in her life, this is a pretty good biography. It reads added like novel than a bio. Gooch also does a good job of showing how Flannery’s life inspired her literature (al~ she despised reading into books and stories in this way). The sections detailing Flannery’s portion in Catholic theology and various theological writings can get a small dense, especially if you are not familiar with them — I’m Catholic and I quiet had to reread some pages. But Flannery’s fiction was profoundly influenced by faith, so if you really want to dig deeper into this side of her writing, you’re better off reading some of the identical theology texts she did. The book also includes two sets of photographs of Flannery’s clan, schoolmates, friends, editors and homes in Milledgeville and Savannah. I wish Gooch had been dexterous to reprint some of her drawings and cartoons from her guild days as well. At one time, Flannery worked as an sketcher for her college paper and had aspirations to be a cartoonist. Gooch mentions divers of these drawings, but it would have been nice to give attention to them. Overall, it’s a good introductory book for readers pure beginning to develop an interest in Flannery O’Connor.
