The man who brought the Beatles to America, legendary music promoter Sid Bernstein, is now the center of a viral social media campaign to rescue his personal story—and a major part of rock ‘n roll and civil rights history—from obscurity. The makers of Bernstein’s critically praised biopic, Sid Bernstein Presents…, have teamed with Kickstarter.com, the social media fundraising site, to raise enough money for the film to fight the media conglomerates which have suppressed the film’s release.
Sid Bernstein Presents…is a 110 minute documentary film on the life of the famous music ingénue and civil rights activist who, in addition to bringing the Beatles and The Rolling Stones to America, and organizing the landmark Beatles Shea Stadium concert, also repped James Brown, Tito Puente, The Rascals, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, Abba, and Quincy Jones, and organized concerts with Elvis, Jimmy Hendrix and Frank Sinatra, among many others.
The Kickstarter.com campaign for the film Sid Bernstein Presents… is raising $100,000 to fight for the music and film rights needed to get the film released—and a crucial part of American and music history told.
“Sid has done so much for music and public culture,” said the film’s co-director, Jason Ressler. “The fact that his contribution to history is slowly being buried and forgotten is tragic. It’s our turn to fight for Sid, since he spent so much of his life fighting for a free and equal culture in America.”
The campaign will honor donors who give $30 with a pre-release Collectors Edition DVD of the film. Donors who give $100 will receive a limited edition poster signed by the Beatles promoter. Digital Distribution Producer and Associate Producer credits will also be given to honor certain donors.
The film features a series of interviews with some of the most influential and beloved personalities of rock ‘n roll history—including the last film interviews with James Brown and Latin great Tito Puente before their respective deaths. Shirley McClaine, Lenny Kravitz, The Rascals, The Moody Blues, Paul Anka, Steve Van Zandt, Dick Clark, Jerry Vale, and many others.
“Sid was doing what the Kennedys and Martin Luther King discovered later, but Sid had already begun to do it through music,” James Brown says in an exclusive, never-before-seen interview in the film. The Huffington Post also called Sid a “Founding Father” of modern music and pop culture.
