The Ceramics Annual of America, September 10th-12th with the opening reception September 9th, is the largest ceramics exhibition in the United States, featuring some of the top artists in America. Lectures, educational panels and tours will be offered throughout the weekend by Oakland Museum Chief Curator Phil Linhares, Director of the Richmond Art Center Nancy Servis, public artist Ray Gonzales, former curator of the San Jose Museum of Art Susan Landauer, eminent art historian Peter Seltz, and UC Berkeley professor emeritus Jim Melchert. Featuring artwork by Robert Arneson, Robert Brady, Margaret Keelan, Jim Melchert., Richard Shaw, John Toki, Peter Voulkos, and many other famous and well-known artists. Especially exciting will be an installation of a historically important work,”Walls of Mem” by artist Harold Paris, a work not exhibited since 1965. Don’t miss the lecture on this seminal work of art Saturday afternoon, September 11, from 2:00pm to 3:00 pm presented by Peter Selz and Jim Melchert.
Educational demonstrations will continue through the weekend. Demonstrators include by Bill Abright, Jeff Downing, Guangzhen Zhao, and Clayton Thiel.
Bring the kids. There will be opportunities for kids to explore building with clay led by Kevin Neirman’s exploratory ceramics program, Kids ‘n Clay; artistic childcare will be offered throughout the weekend.
Organized by the California Ceramics Cooperative, a group of invested regional ceramic artists, CAA will bring together an impressive number of the nation’s top ceramic artists, instructors and collectors. This ambitious new exhibition and fair spotlights the quality and diversity of contemporary ceramics in America. The first event of its kind in the United States, the annual is modeled on the Ceramic Biennials held in Europe, Korea, Japan and China. The Ceramics Annual of America, expected to be an unprecedented event, will provide a venue for regional and national artists working in the clay medium to show their work to a broader group of collectors.
