Jewelry designers who previously worked exclusively with gold are switching or expanding their lines to sterling silver, as recently reported by the National Jeweler. Silver has become the material of choice for both consumers and designers due to economic pressures and a need for jewelry that can do more.
Designer Danny Bushart of Romantic Jewelry, whose renowned collection of Hawaiian flower jewelry is mostly based in fine sterling silver, is not surprised.
“To me, silver has always had a more classic appeal – silver jewelry goes with more wardrobes than gold, and buyers realize this. Plus, with the recent inflation of gold prices, working with gold has become less manageable from an artistic and business perspective.”
Bushart says that the price of gold is sometimes liable to increase so fast that it’s possible for designers to lose money working with it.
“In cases where a buyer has requested a custom design in gold, you quote a price based on market value plus your time that both you and the buyer feel is fair. But when you order the gold you’re going to be working with, you can find that the value has jumped. You’ve already promised to create the piece for the original price, so now you’re working for free.”
Such issues are industry-wide, and even attempts to mitigate rising costs by buying reserves of gold ahead of time have proved fruitless. As the retail price increases, more customers are deciding gold isn’t worth its actual value. Artificial inflation of gold prices by hard asset investors is the likely cause. Meanwhile, silver’s market value has also increased, albeit more moderately, and as such has found a sweet spot for consumers as new sterling silver lines prove successful for their designers.
“Sterling silver jewelry can take you a long way,” says Bushart. “Because silver works with so many outfits and styles, casual or formal, you find you need less jewelry. That makes it practical and cost effective – and truly ‘classic’, too. You just need to find the right pieces that define you.”
