New Programme in the UK Encourages Children to Study a Second Language

Recent reports show that the number of UK pupils studying a second language has fallen to a new low. Some experts blamed a decision by Labour to make languages optional for the first time in 2004, thus allowing thousands of pupils to drop the subjects at age 14. Foreign languages are believed to be among the most demanding subjects in the school curriculum, with fears that many pupils are abandoning them to boost their overall results. New to the UK, Ready-Steady-Move offers young children a joyful experience on their first encounter with the study of a foreign language.

Academic research strongly indicates that the most important and influential years of a student’s educational life are kindergarten. In an effort to make these foreign languages more appealing and fun to learn, the Helen Doron Educational Group developed a multilingual movement programme called Ready Steady Move! where pupils acquire the basics of new languages through fun songs with dance, martial arts, Pilates and yoga. The languages pupils are learning with this innovative educational programme are French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Hebrew and English.

Helen Doron, CEO and founder of the Helen Doron Educational Group says, “A moving body is a learning body. We are opening up children to a new language while their body is learning movements and flexibility from different important physical disciplines. By introducing a foreign language in kindergarten and the early classes of primary school, the child’s brain will easily and naturally absorb the language, with its accent, rhythm and grammar. By the time students get to the age where they can choose to study a foreign language they will have a positive attitude, will learn easily and be ready to become a citizen of Europe.”

Running successfully already in Russia, Italy and Israel, the programme is being piloted this year in the UK and master franchises are being offered there. “Moreover, the good memories of the early childhood classes with Ready-Steady-Move! encourage older students to choose a second language in school,” Doron added.

Ready-Steady-Move! is taught by especially trained teachers, to children aged 3 to 8, accompanied by music CDs and Pilates and Yoga DVDs for home training. For more information: www.ready-steady-move.co.uk
